Bucs Dominate; Commercials Bore; and How About That Halftime Show

Tom Brady completely dismantled the rumors of him being a “washed” quarterback and being incapable of winning in Sunday’s Super Bowl performance. The Buccaneers put on an impressive win against the loaded Kansas City Chiefs while restricting the star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, to zero touchdowns thrown and two interceptions. But the deciding factor in this game was not Tom Brady’s performance; rather, it was the incredible amount of pressure The Buccaneers’ defense put on the young Kansas City star Patrick Mahomes. The defense hit Mahomes a total of 10 times and sacked him 3 times, an unusual performance for the former MVP who has been incredible in the last two years. When asked about the loss, Mahomes was quoted by ESPN as saying the loss was “the worst I think I’ve been beaten in a long time”. A dominant Buccaneers team has had some concern about Tom Brady’s career possibly coming to an end; however, when asked by Jim Nantz (CBS Commentator) if there was more to come in football, Tom Brady responded “We’re coming back”. The greatest of all time is starting another dynasty in Tampa.

Super Bowl commercials in the past have been a well-known attraction of the game. Throughout the years, companies have paid millions of dollars into producing these advertisements. This year, the commercials were overall disappointing. Most companies did not mention the events from 2020, and chose to simply get straight to what they wanted to sell, which resulted in many boring advertisements during the game. There seemed to be an opportunity for companies to play off the events of 2020 to create very interesting and entertaining advertisements. Very few of these companies actually acted on this opportunity and got creative with their commercials. Those that did, like the Bud Light seltzer lemonade commercial and the Cadillac “Scissor Hands” advertisement, were able to produce funny and interesting commercials that captivated the audience. Compared to previous years, the commercials from the 55th Super Bowl were extremely dissatisfying.

Candian singer The Weekend took to the stage last night at the Pepsi Halftime Show for Super Bowl LV. Leading up to his performance, fans questioned his upcoming narrative due to his bandages. While rumors of a facelift circulated, it was a part of his intended storyline all along.

His performance was filled with gory clues and a creepy setup. It’s safe to say he left the audience wanting to know more. The performance mostly took place off the field and overall it was very different from halftime shows of years past. Due to COVID-19, there was no large stage or light show spread across the field. Instead, the dancers stayed spread out, 6 feet apart, for the majority of the performance. The most iconic moment from the show came when The Weekend danced inside a glowing maze with a close-up camera. For the entire performance, the dancers wore facial coverings as a part of their outfits. Despite the pandemic, The Weekend and the dancers still managed to put on a great show.
