Chocolate Milk: What happened? Where did it go?

The dispenser that no longer distributes chocolate milk

Chocolate milk was served to the GCDS Upper School community back at the beginning of October. Crowds of students would swarm the milk dispenser trying to get a taste of the sweet, succulent nectar that we call chocolate milk. Rather than using flex time to get extra help from a teacher, most students would quickly try to get to the cafeteria and have some chocolate milk.

By December, chocolate milk was no more. Many students were upset and disappointed to find that chocolate milk was no longer being served. No one really understood why it vanished. When asked how she felt about the chocolate milk not being served anymore, Jose, an 11th grader, expressed, “I was kinda confused to see that it wasn’t served anymore because a lot of people liked it, and drank it, including me.”

The truth behind the disappearance of chocolate milk is not some mystery. Dr. Stein explained, “It’s too expensive … as much as I wanted to bring chocolate milk in, it’s just too much money out of my budget. I mean, $1500 is almost a full day’s worth of budget just for chocolate milk.”

After the complaints from the student body, the student government made a desperate effort to write up a proposal and bring the sweet chocolate potion back. Student Body President, Jackson, 12th grader, explained the attempts the student government made. “In December, we got student government together and in one of our meetings, we made a chocolate milk proposal that was written by Tito Miguens and sent to Winters, Rhodie, and the dining hall staff. That basically just brought up how chocolate milk was very popular among the students, and how chocolate milk was very beneficial to the GCDS students and they were very upset when it was taken away.”

Chocolate milk made a crowd-pleasing brief appearance for a week in December. Unfortunately, now it is April, and chocolate milk hasn’t been seen since its disappearance. Now we know what has happened to chocolate milk and why it has left us. All we can do today is hope that eventually the chocolate milk will come back.
